At Certain Sparks Music in Old Town Lompoc, music lessons are about much more than just learning to play an instrument. They’re helping local kids and teens build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and find a healthy outlet for stress and anxiety—all while making new friends and becoming part of a vibrant creative community.
Many parents first bring their children to Certain Sparks hoping to spark a love of music, but they quickly discover the unexpected benefits. Through weekly one-on-one lessons, group classes, and open mic events, students gradually build their social and emotional skills. Learning music requires active listening, patience, self-expression, and teamwork—skills that naturally carry over into school, home, and friendships.
“It’s not just about the notes,” says Randall Sena, longtime teacher and program director. “When a student works through a difficult song, performs for the first time, or collaborates in a band class, they gain tools to express themselves and connect with others.”
Music is also a proven way to reduce stress and anxiety. Practicing regularly can improve focus and emotional regulation, and performing—even in a low-pressure environment—can help students face fears and grow more confident. For many kids in Lompoc, Certain Sparks becomes a safe, supportive space to be themselves.
The studio also offers free group classes, scholarships, and community programs through the Certain Sparks Music Foundation, making sure that income is never a barrier to participation.
Whether your child is shy, energetic, anxious, or simply curious, music lessons at Certain Sparks Music can be a powerful tool for growth. And in the process, they’re helping build a stronger, more connected Lompoc—one song at a time.
